It was barely a month. He had just left the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology that he had gained admission to. Just a month before he had been lauded with honors for having made it. Yes, made it through the severely competitive IIT-JEE exams that so many students were so desperately striving to crack. Not only had he made it but he had secured one of the top ranks that entitled him to the most lucrative courses like Computer Science and Electronics or even the integrated Masters programs.

His friends thought he was off his head. His parents thought he had been stressed out and burned out. His teachers thought he was being needlessly foolish. He was frittering away something that was a gift, a precious gift that would never come back again. Even he himself wondered whether he was not being a bit careless. But he had done it and there was no going back. He had given up his admission and returned back. Somehow he felt he was being right.

Harish had always wanted to build cars. He was fascinated by automobiles and automobile engineering. He dreamed of building a car that would out-beat all the existing models. He had been working on a different kind of turbo propulsion system. He had done enough research to know that it wasn't there in the market. Nor was it there among the many patents he had occasion to go through with the help of his father who was in one of the best Automobile companies in the Nation.

He had put in an enormous amount of time and energy since his 9th grade to master the IIT-JEE material and was fully prepared by mid 11th grade to tackle the mains. No wonder he had secured a rank that entitled him to select courses in the Institutes of Technology. But just as he entered the very first class in the Institute, he felt a deep disappointment. Somehow that wasn't what he had been longing for. In a month's time he felt he could take it no longer. True, several of his friends who were equally interested and capable like him were happy, in fact very happy to be at the IIT. It was not that the classes were not good. They were by far very good. They were interesting even. The professors were very learned. It was just that he could not connect to the way the whole thing was. Because there was one thing that Harish wanted more than anything else. He wanted to roll up his sleeves and get to work directly on the real stuff. He had no patience with theory unless it was immediately tied down to innovation.

And one day, in that very Institute he attended a seminar by a distinguished professor from the Georgia Institute of Technology. The professor spoke about the most recent work they had done and how one of his team members was an undergraduate student. The project they were working on had been initiated by that student and the professor had directed the rest of the members to focus on it. He had found the undergraduate student's ideas very innovative. At the end of the talk, Harish had gone up to the professor and spoken to him. After advising Harish on several matters the professor had simply said.

"In the United States, students like you, I mean, students who have already a strong motivation along particular fields, take a Gap Year. They take a gap year because they want to be very clear in their minds about the field they want to chose. And they want to chose it with due preparation. So they take the gap year and learn. They explore, discover, do projects, innovate and then apply for the Universities. In this way they make no mistake about choosing their professional course. In fact we consider those students who take a gap year to be more mature than those who do not."

That single conversation had determined Harish's decision. He had quit the Institute and returned back. And fortunately for him, one of his friends led him to the CFRCE Gap Year Program. His friend had told him,

"I was there at CFRCE the last year and learnt a great deal, well beyond my years. I then secured a seat in the top engineering and medical colleges. I joined the best engineering college among the list. But from my 8th grade my interest lay in Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence. And no engineering college had that combination. So I left the college, took the CFRCE Gap Year Program and spent the year learning a great deal of mathematics and artificial intelligence. I was exposed to the works of Jeff Hawkins, Marvin Minsky, Douglas Hofstadter, Roger Penrose, Steven Pinker, Rudy Rucker and the most fascinating of them all, Ray Kurzweil. His books, "The Singularity is Near," and "How to Create a Mind," floored me. It was an unforgettable year and now I am on my way to the Carnegie Mellon Institute, USA where I plan to do my Mathematics, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence studies."

That was good enough for Harish. He applied and soon secured admission to the CFRCE Gap Year Program. By the end of the program, he had a patent on his turbo propulsion system, obtained 100% score in his SAT and was offered admission at his dream place, the Georgia Institute of Technology wherein an earlier bright young student of the CFRCE Accelerated Learners Program, Vikram Krishnaswamy, who had secured two patents in automobile ignition mechanism, was already graduating.

The CFRCE Gap Year Program provides an opportunity for students who have completed their 12th grade (Gap Year Junior Level) or Bachelors degree (Gap Year Senior Level) to learn, discover, explore, research and innovate and then settle on their professional course of studies. It empowers them to focus either on a particular field of their interest or to discover fields that could possibly give them a greater range of challenges and opportunities.

• Gap Year Junior Level: Students who have just completed their 12th grade.
• Gap Year Senior Level: Students who have just completed their B. Sc, B.E, B. Tech or equivalent.

Admission Process

• The interested student and parents take an appointment and meet the Program Director.
• After the first meeting with the Program Director, an Application Form for the particular program will be sent by email.
• The completed application form is to be submitted over email to admissions@cfrce.com.
• The CFRCE Board will shortlist and finalize the selection of the student.
• Selected students can then enrol themselves by completing the admission formalities.

The decision of CFRCE board on all matters regarding admission is final.
